Sue moved to North Carolina 6 years ago after retiring from 30 years of overseas work.
She began her international work after raising three children and having a successful career as a physical therapist. She turned to bringing humanitarian assistance to people in need first through International Non-Government organizations (NGOs) such as the International Federation of the Red Cross, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, World Vision and World Rehabilitation Fund. Following 10 years with NGOs, she started working for the US Government as an International Humanitarian Advisor. In this role, she lived and worked in 17 American Embassies around the world. These included numerous countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia where she coordinated US Government relief programs in response to floods, earthquakes, droughts and war.
She has written a book, “Outside Heaven, an Afghanistan Experience” to share her work in Afghanistan. In her book she discusses her life in Afghanistan in 2002 at the very beginning of the war. She writes about the challenges she faced as an outsider and a woman in a strict Islamic society where men do not mix with women.
Sue got her under graduate education at Boston University and then her graduate degree at the University of North Carolina. In addition, she has received extensive training with the US Government for security and embassy protocols. She trained with US Military in survival techniques in war zones. She has also trained with many agencies in the United Nations(UN).
She is married to Mike McIntyre and has three children and four grandchildren.
